A Pup of Many Names

Also known as the Cavadoodle and the Cavoodle, this breed is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle/Miniature. While it initially originated in the United States, the breed’s irresistible look and personality won the hearts of dog lovers worldwide, and has become one of the most loved family pets!

Physical Features

Often described as a fuzzy teddybear, the Cavapoo’s appearance is definitely part of it’s charm! Their distinct features are definitely their endearing eyes, floppy ears and soft round faces!

They are relatively small in size and often weigh between 5-10kg for both males and females.

Being a crossbreed, this pup can sometimes inherit different characteristics of it’s original parent breeds. For example:

  • Fur Types: Some Cavapoos inherit the soft silky coat of the Cavalier, while other might end up with more wirey and wavy coats coming from their Poodle lineage. However, they are all considered to have low-shedding coats, making them a very favored breed for people with allergies.
  • Coat Colours: This dog’s coat can come in a range of different colors and shades, including black, chestnut, gold, white, brown with white and black with white and tan.

Temperament and Training

A gentle companion, this pup has a heart of gold and will love nothing more than to smother their owners with love. Great family pets, their sweet temperament means they can get along great with children – and even other household pets!

The Cavapoo thrives on companionship and human interaction, and can experience extreme loneliness if left alone for a long period of time leading to certain behavioral issues. Cavapoos are ideal for dynamic and loving families where they can fit right at home and always find someone to turn to and play with!

In terms of Training, Cavapoos are generally very intelligent and respond easily to positive reinforcement and reward-based training. Being a sensitive breed, they often respond negatively to harsh correction or heavy-handed training.

Care and Exercise

While considered a relatively low-maintenance dog, Cavapoo’s do require regular grooming to maintain their coats, especially when growing them out. A perk of this, however, is that your Cavapoo’s coat is often hypoallergenic and experiences shedding in low levels, making it very easy to maintain.

Making sure your pup’s ears are clean and healthy is also important, as their floppy and long nature can sometimes leave them prone to certain diseases.

When it comes to exercise, 30-60 minutes of daily exercise should usually satisfy the gentle Cavapoo, who will most likely spend a few hours taking a nap afterwards!
