Oatmeal Chicken Biscuit Dog Treat Recipe

While your idea of a great biscuit might involve chocolate chips or raisins, these things are simply not good for your dog. They would much rather have something that tastes like it fell right off of the meat wagon. This is why dehydrated meat snacks are so popular with dogs everywhere. If you are looking to provide a healthy treat for your dog, you can add some oatmeal into the pure protein snack. This will allow you to create the kind of treat they will love and the snack you will feel good about giving.

When creating these kinds of treats, it is better if you can use Irish Steel Cut oats rather than converted oats. The difference is in the amount of nutrients that are in the oats as well as the protein. An additional benefit to the steel cut oats is the fact that without going through a lot of conversion, there are fewer additives in the oatmeal itself. The chewiness of the oatmeal is an added benefit that your dog will love.

When adding in the chicken, always make sure that you are using chicken that has been fed a vegetarian diet. This will provide you with a form of chicken that has more protein and will generally be antibiotic free. This is a benefit to your dog in helping to avoid future health problems.

Remember that with these treats, you can control how chewy or crisp they are by how long you bake them. If you are looking to get the best control over the quality of these treats, make only enough for two weeks and store them in the fridge.


2 Cups Prepared Oatmeal

1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour

½ Cup Chicken Broth (Low Sodium)

2 Eggs (Large)

½ lb. Chicken (cooked, shredded)


Preheat oven to 350˚F. Mix together everything but the chicken in a stand mixer with a dough hook. Work in the chicken on a floured surface until dough comes together as a fairly solid mass. Roll the dough until it is 3/4” thickness. Cut biscuits using your favourite bone shaped cookie cutters or other shape you prefer. Arrange evenly across a lightly oiled cooking sheet. Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes or until desired doneness. If you want a snappy biscuit, turn the oven to 125 after 10-15 minutes and let cook an additional hour. Cool and store in fridge until ready to use. If using within the next day or two, you can leave these at room temperature.
