Peanut Butter And Pumpkin Dog Treats

Everyone knows that their dog likes eating peanut butter. They would eat a whole jar by themselves if you let them. However, it is not good for your dog to eat too much peanut butter, so you will need to make sure that you are doling out the peanut butter they are eating in smaller amounts. Doing this in the treats that they eat will allow you to make sure that you are not giving your favourite pet too much peanut butter at any given time.

These amazing dog treats combine the flavours of peanut butter with the health benefits that pumpkin brings to the table. They are simple to create and fun to make for your dog. While this recipe calls for fresh roasted pumpkin, keep in mind that you can use tinned pumpkin if you prefer. The main thing is to make sure that no matter what you are using, that you are using the highest quality possible.

As has been stated in other recipes on this site, you want to make sure that the peanut butter you are using is organic rather than processed using high fructose corn syrup. In fact, if you can find the peanut butter that uses no sugar or salt, this is the best way to make a dog treat that is good for your pet. Dogs cannot handle a lot of sugar or salt and minimizing what you are using in your peanut butter will help you to make a better treat.

Some recipes using pumpkin will call for cinnamon. This is up to you as to whether you want to use it or not. I do not include it because I feel that it is something that dogs do not particularly enjoy. It does make the treats smell delicious and yummy, but since you are not the one eating them, you might want to stick to the aroma of the peanut butter for your dog’s sake.

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

2 1/2; cups Whole Wheat Flour

2 Large Eggs

1/2; cup Roasted Pumpkin (peeled, deseeded, and pureed)

2 Tbs. Peanut Butter

1/4; cup Chicken Stock


Preheat oven to 350˚ F (175˚ C). While oven is preheating, sift your flour and place in large bowl with a whole in the centre of the flour. Drop in the remaining ingredients into the whole you have made. Use a wooden spoon to combine ingredients going from the centre of the bowl moving out. As the ingredients come together into a ball, use your hands to work the dough the rest of the way. Dust a surface and knead the dough until it is firm. Roll out the dough into a 12; inch-thick. Dust the dough with flour and use fun cookie cutters to make the treats. Bake in oven until hard or about 40 minutes. To make these treats even snappier, turn the oven down to its lowest setting about 5 minutes before being done and leave in the oven for an extra hour or two.
