Peanut Butter Dog Bones

Dogs have always been known to enjoy peanut butter. Whether it is straight off of your spoon or from the jar, your dog will enjoy eating peanut butter in just about every form. Make sure that your dog is not allergic to peanuts before making these treats. As long as you know your dog is fine to eat these treats, you will only need to make sure that you are not feeding too many or obesity might become a factor.

Make sure that you are picky about the kind of peanut butter you are using. Peanut butter with a lot of salt or sugar will not be good for your dog. You do not have to go organic or anything like that, but you should make sure that you are buying a natural peanut butter to use in these treats. If at all possible, grind your own peanut butter to assure it is nothing but pure peanuts being used.

An additional note about the flour that you are using: You can use just about any kind of flour, as long as your dog is not allergic to it. If your dog has a wheat allergy, try using potato flour or one of the other kinds of flours out there. Whole wheat flour is recommended for use in recipes because it has the most fibre and health benefits for your dog. You can play with the moisture ratio in the recipe if the flour you are using absorbs more than the whole wheat flour mentioned in this recipe.


1 Cup Converted Oats

1 Cup Water (hot)

1 Cup Peanut Butter

4 Cups Whole Wheat Flour

1 Egg (large)

1 Cup Chicken Stock


Start by soaking the converted oats in the hot water for about ten minutes. Once the oats have absorbed the water and the mixture has cooled slightly add in the peanut butter and stir until smooth. Add in remaining ingredients and mix just until flour is completely incorporated. Add additional flour or water as necessary. Wrap with plastic wrap and keep cold for 24 hours. Allow to warm to room temperature and roll out to half a centimetre. Use a bone cookie cutter to cut treats or cut the treats into bars. Bake in oven at 200˚C (400˚F) for 15-20 minutes or until dry. If you prefer a slightly crisper treat, leave in oven and reduce temperature to lowest setting. Allow to bake for an additional few hours and remove when desired crispness is achieved.
