Schoep The Dog Sadly Passed Away

by Chelsea Dogs

Only a month ago we celebrated Schoep’s 20th birthday but sadly on Wednesday Schoep passed away.

Schoep became an internet sensation when this picture of his owner soothing his arthritis in a lake went viral. Over 187,000 people follow Schoep and John on their Facebook page, captivated by the love the two had for each other.

The moving photograph of man and dog in the water inspired strangers to donate to help the dog, which meant that Schoep received the best possible veterinary care in the last few weeks.

So much money came in, Mr Unger and Schoep’s veterinarian, Erik Haukass, decided to put the excess cash to good use.

Dr Haukass said: ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before,’ he said. ‘We realized we had received more money than we would reasonably spend on Schoep’s care.’

John and Dr Haukass decided to use the rest of the money to help others. They created Schoep’s Legacy Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to help low-income families care for their ageing dogs thanks to donations from people as far away as Saudi Arabia and Japan. To date the foundation has raised over $25,000.

“It could help another 30 or 40 Schoeps,” said Haukass.

On Thursday John posted this picture on their Facebook page  along with the lines “I Breathe But I Can’t Catch My Breath…Schoep passed yesterday.”
